What to Do When Your Garage Door Opener Breaks

Garage door openers are a contemporary part of our modern ‘push button’ living, but what happens when it does not work, when you push your automatic garage door opener button and – nothing. Fortunately, if you live in Calgary, there’s General Door Services for installation, repair, and replacement services of garage door openers.

General Door Services’ highly trained and skilled experts perform garage door repairs thoroughly and safely on all makes and models, with a professional diagnosis and repair often being much less expensive than replacing the entire unit. Common problems include broken torsion or extension springs; photo-eye requiring realignment; worn gears and sprockets in the motor; broken door cables; warped, cracked or broken panels; an opener remote or wall button not working, and a sagging chain or belt. Continuing to use a door with any of these issues can cause further damage to the door to the point that the door becomes misaligned, works intermittently, or doesn’t work at all.

This brings us back to our original question, what happens when your automatic garage door opener stops working. Here are a few simple fixes, like replacing the batteries in your remote unit, that can give you confidence in calling in the professionals at General Door Services.

To start, doors, windows or alternative access points may need to be considered but if your garage is without one, there should be a manual cable release which disconnects the door from the opener chain so that you can manually open it. Look for a red rope with a handle attached to the end of it. This will be hanging from the bottom of the operator rail. When the rope is pulled the trolley will be disconnected from the door, allowing you to push the door open manually.

Once manually released, check to ensure that it opens and closes smoothly. If it doesn’t, the problem is with your tracks, rollers, or springs. Remember to stay safe at this point - work with the door down so it doesn’t come crashing down on you or someone else, and unplug the opener, this way no one can ‘accidentally’ hit the remote button, and you remove the risk of electrocution. Other problems that can occur include:

  • the wall switch or the switch wires fail, requiring replacement;

  • you may need a new remote - try a universal remote or you can install a new receiver;

  • check to see that the safety sensors are in alignment, direct sunlight shining on sensor eyes can make them misbehave;

  • no sound or no lights suggests a bad circuit board, lightning strikes are the most frequent reason for a circuit board’s demise;

  • a broken trolley carriage, main drive gear, and loose, broken, or a slipped chain or stripped gears are all signs that your automatic garage door is in need of a tune-up and repair.

Remember your annual garage door maintenance too like lubing the rail where it comes in contact with the trolley carriage, and adjust the travel of the door to prevent excess wear and tear on the shaft and gears. At General Door Services, we provide you with a garage door you can trust, and provide scheduled maintenance for homes and businesses including repairing, lubricating and testing your garage doors to keep them running great.
